Some beach in my mind
Following the scars of cruelty
in some shore lost in my mind
We didn’t look to each other
just noisy echoes and sand
This animals were left to die
tied to long poles in the land
waiting for the high tide to rise
Deep anguish the rush the run
Waves were crashing my body
I was cold and confused
my hands were numb
but I could release this dog
(German shepherd, Labrador?)
Then it went away from my sight
Then two cats floating in the ocean
I screamed in pain and desolation
Awakened spirits came to visit
Cats, little cats, coming from nowhere
The only ones that saw me as a tree
My shoulders where full of them
I was trying to keep them alive
(or were they trying to keep me alive?)
I remember I was lost and panicking
but I stayed in stubbornness anger
and the waves in my back and the mist
then a cat asking for help somewhere
I saw the pole and the rope and I saved it
for that moment at least for now
but it again went away, swimming
a little submarine about to sink
I was full of sorrow by that time
I had to come back the tide was high
but more and more cats in the ocean
waiting to be rescued
always going away
Oda a la bicicleta / Ode to bicycles (Pablo Neruda)
Iba
por el camino
crepitante:
el sol se desgranaba
como maíz ardiendo
y era
la tierra
calurosa
un infinito círculo
con cielo arriba
azul, deshabitado.
Pasaron
junto a mí
las bicicletas,
los únicos
insectos
de aquel
minuto
seco del verano,
sigilosas,
veloces,
transparentes:
me parecieron
sólo
movimientos del aire.
Obreros y muchahas
a las fábricas
iban
entregando
los ojos
al verano,
las cabezas al cielo,
sentados
en los
élitros
de las vertiginosas
bicicletas
que silbaban
cruzando
puentes, rosales, zarza
y mediodía.
Pensé en la tarde cuando
los muchachos
se laven,
canten, coman, levanten
una copa
de vino
en honor
del amor
y de la vida,
y a la puerta
esperando
la bicicleta
inmóvil
porque
sólo
de movimiento fue su alma
y allí caída
no es
insecto transparente
que recorre
el verano,
sino
esqueleto
frío
que sólo
recuepra
un cuerpo errante
con la urgencia
y la luz,
es decir,
con
la
resurrección
de cada día.
I was walking
down
a sizzling road:
the sun pipped like
a field of blazing maize,
the
earth
was hot,
an infinite circle
with an empty
blue sky overhead.
A few bicycles
passed
me by,
the only
insects
in
that dry
moment of summer,
silent,
swift,
transluscent;
they
barely stirred
the air.
Workers and girls
were riding to their
factories,
giving
their eyes
to summer,
their heads to the sky,
sitting on the
hard
beetle backs
of the whirling
bicycles
that whirred
as they rode by
bridges, rosebushes, brambles
and midday.
I thought about evening when
the boys
wash up,
sing, eat, raise
a cup
of wine
in honor
of love
and life,
and waiting
at the door,
the bicycle,
stilled,
because
only moving
does it have a soul,
and fallen there
it isn’t
a transluscent insect
humming
through summer
but
a cold
skeleton
that will return to
life
only
when it’s needed,
when it’s light,
that is,
with
the resurrection
of each day.
Translated by Margaret Sayers.
El niño azul/The blue-kid
A veces funcionaba y creía haber aprendido.
The blue kid was swimming in the lake with a ball in his hand. There was a man giving orders, and using a whistle every once and then. There were other kids floating, or plunging, like leaves of a tree swirling with the wind.
The game was to go in circles, going back, with the ball in his hand. Plunging while looking to the inverted horizon, and leaving the ball free there, in the deepest point. Leaving the small ball be expelled by the pressure of the water. Seeing the ball run away fast, seeing it jump into the air, loosing its inerce, and fall with a splash on the voluptuous surface.
Going back was easier than starting it, without that tricky sphere and looking to the air from underwater. But sometimes there was an anguish of who does not belong and its lost. And then it was hard to go back, and even harder to try to plunge into that lake.
Sometimes he’d suffocate and get out half-drown.
Sometimes it’d work and he’d think he’d finally learned.
Sometimes, there’d be no point so he’d just float with his ball, feeling a little guilty,
feeling a little rebelious.
It didn’t matter, no one cared except for him.
So, why were the others chasing him?
Or those were his own shadows and he was alone?
Cruel kids,
small pack of fears in the hallways,
looking from behind objects with no importance.
And the blue kid went red and black.
And crying and screaming it was him who attacked this time. He chose bottles of red wine, and threw them
to the hate-kid, the terror-kid,
and one after another they broke and stained him with blood.
And suddenly his terror was grief, and then mourning covered his pure love.
Was him, really, that kid,
the cruelty-kid?
Now clean yourself, go to the lake, listen how the water caresses the rocks with tiny waves.
Wash the wine from your small hands.
Your clothes will not be the same color again.
Red stained this chapter.
Black will live in you chest, now heavier.
Blue-kid,
go to the lake and go deep.
You’ll do a circle and see,
it’ll be you who will go up fast
and will fly for a second.
And you’ll fall like a feather in the horizon,
now light,
maybe even transparent.
A scrap of us
So one afternoon we met in a park
and no one was there except our
will to live what we dreamed
Words and words in papers
folded away in a moment of peace
under the shadow of many trees
What I saw
the idea of being free
was the moment I felt you were
with me
Forgive me,
I need to honor this.
The feeling of your skin on mine
A good bye that is not an end anymore
(for a moment is not
but happiness
exultant of joy with no decor
arrogance of a second
where no one but us
means something
has a heart
knows what is to be alive)
so I can see your eyes until it’s dark
Escaping with you through my window this time
it’s complicity
– don’t worry, it’s not that bad
I said
Dreaming with what our lives could be
in that place
the place where we finally have time
to screw everything up
– it’s a beautiful exercise but a danger in life
someone told me
But the light on your face
the green smell of leaves and grass
and just being
with no consideration of time
it’s love
and love made me finally transcend
once there, that day
– I remember
you say.
It lasted a long time and I knew in some point it would be harder to find, so I honor it today. Because I feel my life has a meaning and purpose in it as it were some key to exist.
So I need to honor it before I forget to pause and see.
Because here
no one discriminates
who is with their dreams
and the tenderness alive
in their lips*
*(own translation of one verse of “Bello Barrio” from M. Redoles)
Desencuentro
the dream where you hided
the door, the sign, the paper
the seat, the engine, a garden
all faded
you crushed
I waited
and I tried to clean
I tried
but a song would come
or a nightmare
and I needed to sing
with this voice
foreign non-immigrant
weak sound of creeping rivers
distant as my decision
and I tried to see
but my eyes
were crossing birds
flying away
and I needed to write
about a dream that could not be true
in a poem and another one
and more until dawn would call
and you made drawings and paintings
and even a whole universe
a universe in a box
a face a scent a vase
and last night we talked in a dream
we kissed and hugged and I told you
I love you and don’t vanish again
and I finally scared the shadows of your lucid dreams
with all this fantasy they for sure would be repelled
fucking monsters, what do they know about us
they are what our light can’t reach, just that
but when I stopped you left
and one day you were so far
that I started dreaming awake
and present while asleep
so now
so now who I am
so now
so now where I go
so now what it’s worth
what’s not, my love
this is the catastrophe of time
when time just makes you older
while time just slips on your side
for the next day to come
plenty of none and silence
Some time after I emerged again, full of life and fire, with a red glow like the sun in the afternoon. On the other side you came from the infinite, light and pure, with a yellow glow like the sun that raises. We met in the middle. I woke up.
No closure
No closure
No bodies
No mourn
Is that a choice
It could have been me
Is this even comparable
With any possible experience
It should be
Because I can’t do it twice
I can’t live what I haven’t
What I know is just a finite portion
Of all
Why would I rather
Avoid burying what dies
Slave
Recurring
Confusion
Sombra busco desierto
Frío sol respiro
No hay viento
Mareo sin sales
Suelo náusea sed
Tres horas cuatro
What I need
What you give
No one has the other
What I got
Intentional alarm
Is what I already had
El suelo soporta
Peso que carga
Es mi peso
Inmóvil y cansado
Esperaré
Amor incondicional
No lo busqué
No lo merezco
Amor que está ahí
Siempre
Distance is time
Will you stop this
The world going sideways
Close my eyes
Hear the voice of who is there
Tell me mother
Will you be with me
Tell me father
Will your arms stop it
Tell me
Why you don’t let me
See
What I have
missed
Did you need once
And got just the sound
Of your voice
Did it happen again
Me living a life
Ignoring yours
As now I know
No one will come
If I don’t call first
No mourn
If I don’t see what is dead
If I close, will it open again?
En la oscuridad miro el techo
La tormenta pasó
La tormenta pasó por hoy
I’ll return/I returned
I will return to a city without you
You will be in a different place
Not far away, not that far away
But there will be a dramatic pull
Thousands of strings attached
A tension about to break the air
A slight agony of living everyday
A sudden change that I was used to feel
That is not to be anymore
Not anymore
But what could have been
But never was
And even then
Even
I will miss it
I miss it now that I’m back
I’m back and where you are
It’s because distance is not a measure for us
We lived in beats of time instead
In pulls and releases of Cosmic Guitars
I will return to a room with a white heart
I will fill it with flowers, fresh water, and light
I’m in a room with an empty heart
It’s dormant and dead flowers sleep in his side
I will fill it with flowers, fresh water, and light
A sanctuary is waiting for me
Some sort of warm idea of being
It’s the idea of you, with me
But it happened to us
An afteernoon, when no one was looking
A long night
Some terrible morning
You escaped through my window
And I was not on the other side
I just saw you that last time
I knew when I’d be back, you’d be gone
I knew it and I still don’t
I still don’t
I still
don’t
olor a chocolate y naranjas
Hay
arreglos de guitarra imaginativos
y

Bello Barrio Bello Barrio Bello Barrio Bello Barrio Bello
a hachazos
dentro
de su cuerpo
y van por ahí tranquilos
más tranquilos que son esos
Barrio donde existen horas que después
no fuerán necesarias
y Roque Dalton y John Lennon
Están posibles con la posibilidad que vivieron
Barrio en donde los accidentes son
accidentales
aún no descubierto
Ven a vivir esta fragilidad peligrosa
de corromperse
En donde las librerías de viejo están
llenas de obras que
luego la memoria
tendrá que someter a la fantasía
Barrio en donde los poetas aún
dialogan con la muerte de
madrugada bebiendo pisco y
inexistentes
Se llega por calles subterráneas
Ven a esta bella barriada
a encender el ultimo fuego
amor
